I had been in love with Anna, my best friend’s sister, since we were children.
While other boys noticed different girls, I only ever seemed to notice her.
Anna was kind, quiet, and beautiful. For some reason, even when I was young, I felt certain that one day she would become my wife.
Back then, it seemed like nothing more than a childhood dream.
But as the years passed, my feelings didn’t fade.
Quite the opposite.
They only became stronger.
When I grew older, I finally found the courage to tell Anna how I felt about her.
To my great happiness, I discovered that she had also had feelings for me for a long time.
A few months later, I proposed.
Anna said yes.
I was convinced that the happiest chapter of my life was about to begin.
There was only one person who didn’t seem to share our happiness.
Her brother.
Who also happened to be my best friend.
When he learned that we had decided to get married, his behavior changed noticeably.
He stopped joking with me.
He became quiet and tense.
Several times, he even suggested that maybe we shouldn’t rush into the wedding.
One day, he pulled me aside.
“Are you sure this is really what you want?”
I looked at him in surprise.
“Of course. I love her.”
He stayed silent for a long time.
Then he let out a heavy sigh.
“It’s just… if you knew everything, you might change your mind.”
I didn’t understand what he meant.
I assumed he was simply having a hard time accepting that his sister was getting married.
So I didn’t pay much attention to his words.
On our wedding day, he looked even more worried.
While the other guests laughed, talked, and danced, he barely spoke to anyone.
He kept looking at Anna.
Almost as if he were afraid of something.
Just before we left, he walked over to me.
For a few seconds, he looked directly into my eyes.
Then he said only two words:
“Don’t be afraid.”
It was a strange thing to say.
But that day, I didn’t want to ask questions.
It was already late when Anna and I entered the bridal suite.
I closed the door, smiled at her, and reached toward the lamp beside the bed.
She suddenly stopped me.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“What’s wrong?”
Her expression immediately became serious.
“Turn off all the lights.”
“All of them? It’s already almost dark in here.”
Anna looked at me anxiously.
“Please. All of them.”
I tried to ease the tension with a joke.
“Are you shy?”
But she didn’t smile.
Instead, her expression became even more serious.
“If you don’t turn off the light, I’m going to sleep in another room.”

Her reaction surprised me, but I did what she asked.
The room went completely dark.
Anna turned her back to me and tried to unzip the long zipper on her wedding dress by herself.
She was struggling, so I stepped closer.
“Let me help you.”
But the moment I touched the zipper, she pulled away sharply.
“No!”
She immediately covered her back with her hands.
I looked at her, confused.
“Anna, what’s going on?”
She didn’t answer.
“You’re scaring me. What are you hiding from me?”
For several seconds, she stood there in silence.
Finally, she allowed me to unzip the dress.
As the fabric slowly slipped from her shoulders, I saw something I had never expected.
Her entire back was covered with old burn scars.
For several seconds, I couldn’t say a word.
Anna began to cry quietly.
“Now you understand why my brother was against our wedding…”
I asked gently:
“What happened to you?”
Anna stayed silent for a long time.
Then she began to explain.
When she was only ten years old, a fire broke out in their home during the night.
The children’s room caught fire, and her younger brother couldn’t get out.
Anna didn’t run away.
She did the opposite.
She went back into the burning house to save him.
She managed to help the boy out through a window.
But she suffered serious burns herself.
For months, doctors worked to help her recover.
Later, she had to go through many surgeries.
“My brother always believed everything happened because of him,” she said through her tears. “He spent his whole life feeling guilty. That’s why he was afraid that once you saw my scars, you would stop loving me and wouldn’t want to stay with me.”
That was when I finally understood his behavior.
He hadn’t been trying to destroy our marriage.
He wasn’t trying to keep us apart.
He was simply trying to protect his sister from being hurt again.
I walked over to Anna and gently wrapped my arms around her.
“I fell in love with you long before our wedding. And I still love you. Your scars don’t change anything.”
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then, for the first time that night, Anna smiled.
